WHAT TO DO OUTSIDE IN FREDERICKSBURG
Looking to get away from the main street shopping and restaurants around the city? Fredericksburg offers plenty of adventurous options for you to explore the beautiful hill country. Take your pick of our choices below!
Enchanted Rock Hike & Climbing
A magical place for our family! Don't miss the beautiful natural wonder just 20 minutes from town. It often reaches capacity to make reservations online! Great for hiking or even try out rock climbing (be sure to make reservations with an outfitter to meet you)
Great "in-town" short hike! Perfect at dusk or dark to look over the city, Cross Mountain is a historic marl and limestone hill with an elevation of 1951 ft. It was an Indian lookout prior to early settlers. In 1847 during the settling of Fredericksburg, a timber cross was found on the hilltop. Early Fredericksburg pioneers gave this hill the name “Kreuzberg” or Cross Mountain. In 1946, the permanent lighted cross was raised.
Bird Watching and Fishing @ Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park
Approximately 300 species of birds occur in the Texas Hill Country, where birding is great all year. Be sure to look for the endangered Black-capped Vireos and Golden-cheeked Warblers. An excellent place to view birds in Fredericksburg proper is the Live Oak Wilderness Nature Trail in Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park. Stop for a bird check-list at the park office.
For fishing, stop in the park office and they will direct you to the fishing area in the park.
